“Trending” can mean three different things — and confusing them is how you waste weekends on hype you do not enjoy.
1. Platform charts
In-app top 10 lists measure what people started recently. They favor new releases and algorithmic pushes. Great for discovery, weak as a quality guarantee.
2. Social virality
A 20-second clip can trend because it is shocking, funny, or confusing — not because the full show is strong. Always ask: does the clip represent the average episode?
3. Search interest
Spikes after finales, controversies, or celebrity news. Useful for recaps and explainers; less useful for “what should I start tonight?”
